EIGHT DIE IN SLIDE OF ROCK
Colorado Mountain Road Is Death Trap For Working Crew
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., Dec.12 -(AP)-
Eight men were killed and two others seriously injured in
a landslide on the Mounument Canyon road, 35 miles northwest
of here late Tuesday. The two injured are not expected to
recover.
The men, all employed on a federal road project, were carried
by the slide 200 feet down the mountainside and buried in the
debris. Only four bodies had been recovered early Tuesday night.
The men just had blasted in an an open tunnel on the road and
had returned to clean it out. Another blast on the opposite
side of the canyon apparently loosended the dirt and caused
the slide.
The dead, project supervisors said, are Leo Adams, Frank Greed,
John Rupe, Clyde Winter, Bob Fuller, Claude van Loan and two men
whose first names had not been learned - Carmichael and Wilkins.
The injured are Jack Blasdell and Buster Moreland.
Dead and injured were members of a crew of 50 men which started
work on the road project Monday.
