Dear Nita,
Thank you for sending me that information! My father's mother was Mary Vanhoy. Her
mother was Leatha O. Marshall, one of Millie Marshall Carmichael's sisters. Mary was
the second wife of John Martin Southern (son of George W. and Mina Westermoreland).
To complicate matters, John Southern's first wife was Nancy B. Marshall, the youngest
sister of Leatha and Millie !!! No incest in all of this -- just shows that the marriage
pool in that part of Forsyth Co. wasn't terribly large, I guess.
My father, who was born in 1901, told me this story about "Aunt Millie and Uncle
Billie." His father got a letter from Aunt Millie, asking that he sign an affidavit
attesting to Uncle Billie's services to the Confederacy, so she could get a
widow's pension. According to my father, John said: "I won't do it.
Billie was a bushwhacker, and he got run out of the county after the war."
About the only thing that substantiates this story is that Uncle Billie & Aunt
Millie's last appearance on the Census in Forsyth Co. is in 1860. The 1860 Census is
remarkable in the number of households listed as "unoccupied." Moravian
historians attribute believe the men were hiding from bushwhackers, even though the Civil
War had not started.
I use "Jr." just to distinguish the two Barzillas; and, like you, have never
seen the "Graves" middle name documented.
All of Aunt Milie's siblings were born in Forsyth Co. Her Marshall parents and her
grandfather, Thomas R., are buried in Marshall Baptist Cemetery, located not far from
where most of these Marshalls lived. Several years ago, Phyllis Hoots, whose father was
my father's nephew, found the graves of Martin and Ellener Boswell Marshall in a
family cemetery now on the edge of some woods. Millie's family can be documented by
to 1749!
Do you have any idea who has put on a Moravian thread a genealogy that shows (Le)Mina
Carmichael, daughter of Ducan and Charity, as the wife of a Westmoreland (whose first name
I've forgotten, although I copied that genealogy several months ago)? Yes, we have
found the marriage bond of Barzilla and Polly Westmoreland. That is the only
Carmichael-Westmoreland marriage that we can find.
