For the relatives/lineage of Captain Richard Henry Carmichael, USAAC, command
pilot...period (1940).
Attached is copy of 1940 census of Hamilton Field U.S. Air Base, in Novato Township, Marin
County, California; Enumerator District 22-2, Sheet 24A/Page 36, Line Number 22 -23,
Enumerator Leo A. Vaughan, recorded on 19 April 1940.
Later, as flight commander of 88th Reconnaissance Squadron, he successfully lead a flight
of six (6) Boeing B-17E aircraft from Hamilton Field U.S. Air Base to Hickam Field U.S.
Air Base/Hawaiian Department, Oahu Island, Territory of Hawaii; departing Hamilton Field
CA.
Departing about 2100 hrs (9:00 PM, Pacific time), Saturday, 06 Dec 1941, after a
remarkable 14 hrs over the Pacific Ocean, his flight arrived just about 0755 (7:55 AM,
Hawaiian time), Sunday, 07 Dec 1941, over Oahu Island, just as the Japanese aircraft were
attacking Hickam Field. Capt. Carmichael flew B-17E/41-2429 during this flight.
