My Carmichaels (and McCormicks, also, I believe) came from the Isle
of Lismore, Appin, Argyllshire, in the 1770's, immigrating, first, to North
Carolina and, later, South Carolina. I understand that the population
on Lismore is now quite small, so I found it interesting that there are
still Carmichaels and McCormicks there. They are listed below in an
excerpt from a newsletter from the historical society. I found it on
Lismore's Community Website. The URL is
http://www.isleoflismore.com/
It's worth a visit to the site, just to see the beautiful photographs in the
Photo Gallery (also, some old photos). The website says that "Lios
Mor" is Gaelic for Big Garden and from the pictures I've seen, it's a
very appropriate name!

What have we been doing since we produced our first Newsletter?
Our plans are moving ahead apace: no doubt you have noted that our site has
now been fenced off - plus the Notice board with details of supporting
agencies. Thanks to Tony Perkins for designing and erecting it, this is
something which we must do. We are glad to say that the first contracted
work - was carried out by a local man - John Carmichael (site fencing) which
illustrates how the 'feed-back' from this project can bring economic
benefits in its wake. The masonry work involved in the reconstruction of the
19th century cottage has also been allocated to Jim MacCormick. Several
parties showed interest in undertaking this work and as you will appreciate
this was a difficult decision to make and remain impartial - and we are not
the sole arbiters.
Volunteers have been working on the approaches when they can spare the time,
they are namely:- Archie MacColl, Duncan Livingstone, Archie MacGilivray,
James MacCormick and Duncan MacGregor. This is a true community effort and
only because this spirit of co- operation can we move forward.
Many of these people spoke very encouragingly regarding our Project.. Donald
Martin, George Lyon, Craig Whyte and Beathag Morrison. On behalf of the
Society.. .Tony Perkins (Development Officer) and Donald Black Chairman.
Our thanks to James MacCormick promoter of our annual Prize-Draw and also to
all who contributed to the prize-list, our thanks to all who bought & sold
the tickets. A sum of £556 was raised. A Whist-Drive was held on the night
of the draw which raised £92

Life may not be the party we hoped for,
but as long as we're here, we might as well dance.
