Does anyone on this site have relatives in the iron furnace industry? Specifically I am
interested in the time period 1750-1850. This is the era when American production of iron
for defense, tools and stoves mushroomed. Iron ore was melted with charcoal during this
period, but later coal was used to melt the ore.
My Daniel Carmichael III b. 1829 married Sarah Fagan & son of Daniel II b. 1787
married Nancy Hardy worked in iron furnaces in Bedford and Westmoreland Co. Iron furnace
workers passed on their skills in the family so it was basically an inherited line of
work.
I am trying to locate others that worked in this occupation.
Thanks,
Ann
