In the last 6 years, I have learned the value of backing up...having lost 2 hard drives
and the resulting data. I have rebuilt much, but this was the last part of the family to
do and hasn't been done yet.
Joseph T. Carmichael was married to Emily's mother, Eliza. I found Eliza in the 1860
census in Houston, Co., TX living in the same general area as her sons and her daughter
Emily, then married to E.L. Hale - Joseph not listed. I don't know what happened to
Mr. Hale, but Emily Hale married T.B. Lane in Hill county and she and Mr. Hale's
daughters all lived together. They had a daughter Emma Adella Lane who married my
great-grandfather.
Eliza apparently moved to Texas between 1850 when she, husband, sons, daughter(s?), and
slaves all lived in Rankin Co., MS (near Jackson, MS) and appeared in that year's
census there. I once assumed Joseph T. stayed behind in Mississippi to serve and die in
the unCivil War but have no evidence to indicate he ever served the South. I don't
know if he died before Eliza and family moved, during the move, or after the move, or if
he stayed behind.
The point of all this is that the Carmichael family all appeared in the 1860 census for
Houston Co., TX and all lived near each other. I had done little other research to add to
this even if I had not lost my data. I do still have a print of that census page 56 (Post
Office = Hagurs??) showing Eliza living with sons William and W.T or W.F., next door to
James A. Carmichael who was married to Nancy with children James, Henry, William, and
Elisa and who lived on the opposite of Eliza's house as Emily and E.L. Hale and
daughters Catherine, M.D., and N.E.
I don't have the first clue when the family moved to Hill Co. or to what part of that
county as I have not further researched this side of the family...yet. I will be curious
to follow up this thread as there were a number of other relatives from Hill Co., TX and
nearby in Cleburne, Johnson Co., TX.
Oddly, and scarily, my first wife's family is from Crockett - in Houston, Co., TX
Of course, any additional information is appreciated. I hope all this info doesn't
overwhelm or bore.
Nice to meet you cousin. I live in Hardin, Co., TX now.
