There were several Carmichael brothers/cousins who came to America
between 1770-1780, settling initially in Richmond County, North Carolina,
and then migrating to various places in North and South Carolina. They were
from the Isle of Lismore, Appin, Argyll, Scotland. Some of these original
immigrants were: Duncan, Archibald, Dougald, John and Gilbert.
My line is:
Archibald (my 4-g-grandfather) and ___ Carmichael, of Lismore;
Archibald, born about 1750, in Scotland, and his second wife (?), Mary,
came to America on the Jupiter of Larne in 1774, with young daughter
Katherine, who, like my ancestor, Dougald, may have been the child of
Archibald's first wife. They settled in Richmond County, North Carolina.
Dougald (3-g-) and Flora Monroe Carmichael; Dougald, born about
1768, in Scotland, followed his father to America in 1793/93, after
finishing an apprenticeship in shipbuilding in Glasgow; Dougald was the
first to settle in Marion County, South Carolina, probably because he sought
land on a stream, where he could build and operate boats. There he built
flat-boats and other river craft and managed his farm, not far from his
sister, Katherine, and brothers, Neil and Duncan.
Daniel (2-g-) and Nancy McCormick Carmichael, Daniel born in
Marion County, SC and Nancy born in Richmond County, NC. Nancy
McCormick's mother's maiden name was Carmichael, so that, and other
pieces of information, lead me to believe that the McCormicks were, also,
from Lismore. I do know that they were from Appin. Daniel and Nancy
first migrated to Autagua County, AL, then, eventually, settled in the
Scottish
settlement of Union Church in Jefferson County, MS.
