I am searching for slave roles of the Carmichaels from South Carolina. It is my belief
that the mother of my ggggrandfather Peter Madison Carmichael, named Celie/Sealy was owned
by these Carmichaels, as well as, Peter. There was a migration from S.C. to Texas (Waco
area)and I have found a census from 1870 listing her with her three children and a man
living in Bastrop county at this time. She had been in Texas for awhile because the two
younger boys were born in that state and they were ages 6 and 8 at the time. The children
were all listed as mulatto and I know the stories of my ggggrandfather as being very proud
of his namesake....he also was highly educated and a methodist preacher. I find it very
curious that a slave would be so educated right after slavery was over....was he treated
differently because he was a "true" Carmichael and not one of slavery/ownership?
If anyone has any leads about S.C. Carmichaels that moved to Texas and owned slaves,
please respond.
