I believe that William Carmichael (born mid 1770's in NY and came to Guilford Co., NC
as a child) was the son of Andrew Carmichael. This Andrew Carmichael came into Guilford
County and appears to be receiving land grants as early as 1779. He appears to be the only
Carmichael man old enough to be the father of my William Carmichael.
I found William Carmichael and his wife in the 1800 census in Guilford County, NC and they
are both young and recently married with no children. My husband descends through their
daughter, Lydia Carmichael, who was born in July 1808 in Guilford County (Lydia Carmichael
married William McKendre Clark in Parke County, IN in 1826). We believe that the wife of
William Carmichael was Lydia Gossett, probably the daughter of Thomas Gossett of Guilford
County, NC. Thomas Gossett is listed on the same Guilford County, NC 1815 tax list as
William Carmichael. When Thomas Gossett made out his will in Oct 1831, he mentions that
the heirs (of his daughter) Lydia Carmichael have already gotten their share. This
suggests that in 1830, his daughter Lydia was already dead and that she was married to a
Carmichael. Lydia Gossett Carmichael died in Parke County, Indiana in 1826 at about age
50. I have seen her tombstone there.
William Carmichael and his wife and kids followed the movement from North Carolina out to
Indiana and were found in Orange County, Indiana as early as 1819. William and Lydia
Carmichael sold their Orange county, IN property in Nov 1825. They where next found in
Parke County, IN where (on 7 Nov 1828) he is listed on a land deed as a resident of that
county and is purchasing the land owned by Mary Drake, of Preble County, OH who is the
widow of Jesse Drake, formerly of Parke County, IN. In 1827, William Carmichael of Parke
County, IN, purchases land in Hendricks County, IN. His wife is deceased by that time and
he appears not to have married again. In 1833, when he sells this Hendricks county
property to his son William Carmichael JR., they are both residents of Hendricks County,
IN. I have not found a death date or probate for William Carmichael SR, but I know that
William Carmichael JR died in Hendricks County, IN in 1869.
Andrew Carmichael makes out his will in 1829 in Guilford County, IN and only mentions his
daughters Mary Beeson and Agnes Thompson, granddaughter Susannah Lamb (who gets his houses
and lands) and his grandson Joseph Thompson. He does not mention any of his other children
by name, but states that they "have already received their portions."
