In keeping with the purpose of this list, the
following constructive feedback is provided.
Patricia Tidmarsh, "Elizabeth Carman Forman Parsons Jamaica LI, Cape May NJ
1690," email message from patricia(a)echonyc.com to
Carman-l(a)rootsweb.com mail list, 31 Jul 1999.
The material contained in the subject post for the most part
was taken out of context. First the actual author should have
be cited for the material.
Arthur Adams wrote the article and it was published in the New York
Genealogical and Biographical Record Vol. 82:5-14 (January 1951)
The article was reprinted in Genealogies of Long Island Families,
compiled by Henry B. Hoff and is available today on CD.
The subject post stated that Elizabeth Carman married at
age 16 Johnathan Forman. This is incorrect. Mr. Adams wrote,
"When about 16 years old she married Jonathan Forman as her
first husband." The key word is "about" in other words it
was an estimated age.
Mr. Adams also provided the following in a footnote in the
his article with reference to John-3 Parsons:
"John-3 Parsons was born about 1668 and was a cooper by trade.
On June 14, 1697, he purchased 125 acres of land at Cold Spring,
N.J., from Jonathan Forman, and under date of June 6, 1699, he
is referred to in East Hampton records as of Cape May."
Mr. Adams pointed out in reference to John-2 Parsons, "..the
name of his wife is not definitely known, but she was probably
a daughter of Edmund Shaw"
NO WHERE in the article did Mr. Adams state that John-2
Parsons was probably married to Eliz. Shaw as indicated in
the subject post.
It is very important to accurary cite and quote sources,
if you are going to post the information. At the very
least acknowledge the author of the source material!!
