Patricia Tidmarsh, "H. A. Tredwell - Mary Bedell m. Benjamin Carman
1740 LI NY," email message from patricia(a)echonyc.com to
Carman-l(a)rootsweb.com mail list, 31 Jul 1999.
This post incorrectly quoted the material from Henry Alanson
Tredwell's article, "Robert Bedell of Hempstead, Long Island
and His Descendants" published in the New York Genealogical
and Biographical Record, October 1940. (RECORD 71:370)
The quote which refers to Mary-4 Bedell, daughter of
Richard-3 Bedell was as follows:
"51. Mary 4.
M. in June 1740 at St. George's Ch., Hempstead to
Benjamin Carman of the same town (REC. 12:81). Benjamin
Carman was prob. the same who was appointed guardian of
infant James Bedell 31 July 1769 (Vol. marked "Miscellaneous,",
Register's Office, Queens Co., N.Y.). Was this infant James
Bedell, s. of Elias (No. 38) who had d. preceding yr.; James,
orphan s. of John and Martha, bapt. Sept. 1763 (REC. 11:89),
relationship unknown; or some other James?"
The above quote was the complete entry for Mary-4 Bedell.
Note the "REC." abbreviation used that was omitted from
the subject post. This refers to an earlier Volume and
Page of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record.
The subject post also made reference to the Will of Richard
Bedell. This could be found on the same page for Mary-4
Bedell's entry but it was actually listed by the author
under Richard Bedell's background as well as many references
to events associated with his life. The author went well
beyond the selection of Richard Bedell as an overseer and
surveyor of highways.
The Will entry was also incomplete and the complete
text (REC. 71: 370) read as follows:
" Richard Bedell must have died between 13 May 1761 and
25 Apr. 1762, the dates of his will and probate. In this
testament he stated that he was of Hempstead, mentioned w.,
Phebe, s. Isaac, dau., Elizabeth Green, s. Silvanus, dau.
Mary Carman and her chil. Samuel, Stephen, Mary, Anne, and
Richard Carman, his granddau. Mary Pearsall, then w. of
Nathaniel Ross, and testator's s.-in-law, Carman Rushmore.
The will was witness by a Mary Bedell and others (WNYHS 6:150)."
