In keeping with the purpose of this list, the
following constructive feedback is provided.
Carman Miscellaneous Sightings, Carman Web Space,
Patricia Tidmarsh,
http://patricia.rootsweb.com/carman/carsight.htm,
downloaded 5 August 1999.
On the subject web page that reads "Sightings", I am going
to assume that the author is actually refering to Citings.
Two references to a Caleb Carman are found. Both data
points are tied to Caleb-2 (John-1) Carman and both have
errors on this web page.
Regarding the first item, related to a passage on a ship,
the document did not state permission was required, rather
that Caleb Carman as well as others had "passes" for several
ships departing the Colony of New York. The document "did
not" refer to Hempstead nor "North Carolina". Rather,
the destination of three ships listed was Port Royal
in the Carolinas.
On the second, item of Caleb Carman and Joseph Carpenter
having a sawmill, this is also incorrect. The cited
source is a secondary source. The primary source for this
event is the Jamaica Town Records and the two men were
given permission to build a mill for the use by the
town. By building the mill, both men received additional
benefits from the use of the mill.
A complete transcipt of the above events, as well as
proper citation of the sources, can be found on the
Carman Meeting Place Web Site, under the link to
"Carman Passages". Additionally, the significance
of the above events are discussed.
