I should start by saying that I don't have any specific information for you, only some
ideas. Evans is a terrible name to have to research in Wales, much like Jones and Hughes,
which I'm stuck with. You have my sympathy.
If your mother was fostered out to one of her aunts and uncles, then it is likely to have
been one who was married by 1915 and probably (but not certainly) who already had children
of their own. That might help you sort the wheat from the chaff in terms of aunts and
uncles and at least narrow down the candidates.
You could look at school records for Pembrey - I don't have any idea how many schools
and Sunday schools there might have been. This might offer some information.
I believe I am right in saying that there were still only a few teacher training colleges
who accepted women in the 1930s - that might narrow down your search. I expect the London
Metropolitan Archives might be able to tell you which colleges existed and where their
records might be. I have an ancestor from Carmarthen, Maria Isabel Spivey, who went to
Whitelands College, Chelsea, but that was some years before your mother. Her admission
record my well give you a school and other personal details, like address.
Good luck with your search!

Subject: [CMN-L] The Evans Family from Pembrey
Dear All
I am currently researching my mother's family in Pembrey, of which I
know absolutely nothing. My mother was called Kitty Evans and I have
found out her father was Thomas Evans, a mason, who married Hannah
Lewis, who worked as a housemaid in 1911 for the Roderick Family at
Goodig. I think that Margaret Jones, who was working as a cook at the
same house, later married Thomas's brother, Gwilym! Thomas and Hannah
died in 1922 and 1923, when my mother (who was born in 1915) was 6/7.
All I know is that she was raised by an uncle and aunt in Pembrey, but I
don't know who. Both Thomas Evans and Hannah Lewis had many brothers and
sisters, so it could have been any of these that raised her.
Unfortunately, the censuses stop at 1911, otherwise I could have found
out where she was living in 1931. This would have been shortly before
she left for London to go to Teacher's Training College (which one, I
don't know!). She later moved to Wolverhampton and met and married my
father, Kenneth Lee. As far as I know, she never had any further contact
with her family in Wales. What caused this estrangement has puzzled me
(and my late father!) all our lives. If there is anyone out there who
could shed any light on this story for me, I would be very grateful.
Kind regards
Jeremy Lee
