Hi Althea,
Thanks for your help - the Thomas Copner will relates to the chancery case I
found, the wife Priscilla and Thomas were in Pembridge, but I've not been
able to link them to my known Copners (yet!). The Duncombe Pyrke Davis looks
promising, so I'll follow that up - hadn't heard of him before, or the
general.
Thanks again,
Ellie

Subject: [CMN-L] COPNER - Carmarthen & Llanfynydd
Hi Listers,
I wonder if anyone else is researching this surname in CMN? My 5xgreat
grandfather is John Copner, born c1725-30 who was ordained in 1753 and
served as an Anglican curate around the
Gloucestershire/Monmouth/Herefordshire border. He settled in English
Bicknor
and is buried there with his wife Ann and a couple of his children.
His ordination record states that he was from Llanfynydd, and there are
Copner entries in the parish records, there are also Copner baptisms in
Carmarthen, but I've not been able to find John's baptism. The IGI hasn't
been helpful, and although I know John may have been settled in Llanfynydd
rather than born there it's the only place I have to start. I'll be
sending
off for Andrew Taylor's CD of the Llanfynydd PRs in the next couple of
days,
but has anyone any suggestions as to where else I could look for his
baptism
record? .
John was appointed to the clergy as a 'literate', he didn't study theology
at a university, so there are no education records to track. When John was
curate of Llangua, Monmouthshire, he was recorded as living 'on his estate
at Cloddock' (sic) - John was earlier curate at Clodock, HEF, and married
Anne Powell there. There is a chancery case c1820 about a Copner
Herefordshire property dispute, and there was a large knot of Copners at
Pembridge, HEF in the 1700s, but I can't link John to the Herefordshire
families, and I can't find out where in HEF the disputed property was.
Pembridge is a fair step from Clodock too, even if the roads were dry at
the
time.
The fact that John was educated enough for the Bishop to consider him
suitable for ordination and him later living on his estate suggests that
his
family had money, but I've not been able to find a will or a paper trail
to
follow. John named a son Duncombe Davis Copner (he's my 4xgreat
grandfather), and I've found his marriage to Sarah Harding in Bristol,
otherwise no idea where he was born or why the unusual name - there was an
author named Duncombe, but again I can't link it to my Copners.
Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome - and a fellow Copner
descendant would be ecstatically received!!
Regards,
Ellie Thomas
