Hi Fee
I can see from
'A Story of Carmarthen'
that thre is mention of Sir Lewis Morris 1833-1907.....do you have the write
up abou him. I can also see that John Hughes was Mayor in 1806, if indeed
it is him......(no write up though just a mention of his name)
Do you have this information?
Pauline

Subject: [CMN-L] Hughes family of Carmarthen
Hi everybody,
As things as wet and rainy here in west London, and quiet on the list,
perhaps I could ask if anyone has any ideas for avenues of research for my
Hughes family of Carmarthen?
My great-great-great grandfather Charles Henry Hughes b 1807 d 1879 was
borough treasurer and Land Tax Commissioner and a solicitor in Carmarthen.
He had seven children with Ann Jones but never appears to have married
her, although he is living with the children from 1861 and appears to have
taken responsibility for them. I have asked before whether anyone could
help me to understand this, as it seems a very unusual arrangement. Both
Ann Jones and Charles Henry Hughes are shown as unmarried on all the
censuses they appear on, and the birth certificate for my great-great
grandmother, Maria Elizabeth Hughes b 1838 (alias Jones) shows no father
on the birth certificate which is in the name of Jones. She was already
being called Maria Hughes three years later on the 1841 census, however.
Since I last asked about this on the list I have collected a lot more
information about the family. I discovered that Charles Henry Hughes had
two brothers, John and David Walter Hughes, and both of them had children
out of wedlock. Both also acknowledged the children and made arrangements
for them financially in their wills. His sister Sophia Hughes married
Lewis Morris, and their son Lewis Morris was a barrister and poet who
became Sir Lewis Morris but had to be prevailed upon to marry his common
law wife after they had had several children. It seems extraordinary.
There should be a lot of information about John Hughes, father of Charles
Henry, David Walter et al, as he had made his fortune as a drysalter and
was Mayor of Carmarthen several times, but apart from the fact that he
died in 1829, married Sarah Spence and was always described as "merchant"
I know very little about him. There is a London Gazette entry for a sale
of effects which intrigues me, as it was published in 1859, some nine
years after the death of David Walter Hughes in 1850, which lists a number
of properties including a warehouse, a house on Quay Street and a farm
called Pencelly Issa among other things. The entry says that the sale is
the result of an order from the High Court of chancery in the case of
Philips v Morris. I'm not sure how I go about finding out what this was
about.
If anyone can suggest other avenues of research, anything to explain the
common law wives, or any place I might find more information for John
Hughes, I'd be very grateful.
Fee Berry
