Hi Pat,
Henry Edwards Hill: yes, I have note of his first marriage to Mary Waters,
2nd daughter of Thomas Waters of Tutshill House, parish of Tidenham, Glos.,
banker of Chepstow. Date of marriage, at St Mary's Tenby, was 25 AUG 1839.
There were seven children of this marriage. This wife, Mary, died on board
ship on their way home from Australia in October 1854, when they were about
to disembark at London. A year later he married Mary Anna Johns at St Mary
Magdalene, St Clears. Before his first marriage Henry Edwards Hill lived in
Laugharne at Parsonage Farm with Hannah Thomas, who had three illegitimate
sons by him, in 1833, 1835 and 1837, who all took the name of HILL. One,
John, died in Laugharne aged 22; the careers of his brothers is not known,
but it is thought they may have emigrated to New South Wales. I don't know
what became of Hannah Thomas after HEH's marriage.
One of your listers is researching the names ORMOND and WATERS. I have
plenty of information about the Ormonds; the wife of Thomas WATERS named
above, was Margaret Ormond, daughter of David Ormond of Trenewydd, Lampeter
Velfrey, Pembrokeshire; they married in October 1801 at St Marylebone church
in London. Margaret is buried in St Mary's Church, Tenby, where there is a
memorial slab to her on the floor of one of the aisles.
I have been less successful in researching the Tutshill origins of the
Thomas Waters, apart from the fact that he lived at Tutshill House and was a
banker at Chepstow. I would like to know more. His children were born at
Tutshill I believe, but the family moved to Carmarthen and became (not
altogether successful) bankers there and nearly went bankrupt. The house
called Sarnau near Banc y Felin was built by Thomas Waters and his eldest
son Robert was certainly living there in 1887. Thomas W is said to have been
buried at the church in Lampeter Velfrey, but I have been unable to find a
gravestone there. The youngest son, Edward, became a distinguished
physician to the Duke of Westminster and lived at Chester.
Salaams,
Jean

Hi Jean
As you say Henry was a widower when he got married.
Do you have his previous marriage?
On FreeBMD there is a Marriage of a Henry Edwards Hill in Pembroke
district in the third quarter of 1839 GRO ref 26/849
Would this be him?
Cheers
Pat

Henry Edwards Hill, widower, and Mary Anna Johns at St Clears in 1855 (date
7th December). It could have been in a non-conformist church, as Mary
Anna's father was the Rev. David Johns, known as 'Missionary Johns of
Madagascar'. I believe he was a Congregationalist. His wife had a school
in St Clears and Mary Anna was her assistant.
