Dear Vaughan
I have found the records of the proceedings of the Llanelli Harbour
Commissioners to give quite a lot of detail about some of the Pilots. The
records are or were held at the Llanelli Library. As far as I know they
haven't been indexed but require reading. I have extraxted some info and
will check my notes to see if I found any references to a pilot called Lewis
but I was extracting info about William Mckiernon my ancestor. Interestingly
pilots were also called tide-waiters.
Best wishes
Val Speed

Subject: [Cmn-L] Lewis the Pilots III
My gggrandfather, Robert Lewis, b.1788 d, 1862, and his sons
William
b.1814 d. unknown and John, b.1816 d. 1845 all from Pembrey were
Pilots. Two of these, buried at Jerusalem Chapel, Pembrey, even have
the word Pilot inscribed on their headstone. ( I have a remarkably
clear photo of it which has withstood the test of time )
Does anyone know how they spent their working days. How, for example,
did they obtain permission to guide a ship either in or out of harbour
and would they, perhaps, be restricted to Pembrey/Burry Port.
Are there any publications that describe a Pilots duties and also the
vessels they used and would they have owned or rented these.
I'll very much appreciate any leads.
Vaughan Lewis.
