Just like to make a minor correction to the below mail.
C. Eng is a Chartered Engineer (not just mechanical, I'm also C. Eng. but a civil
engineer. Its also valid for electrical, chemical etc engineers.)
The direction of charteredship is given by a supplementary suffix: MICE (for Member of the
Institution of Civil Engineers); MIMechE (Mechanicals) MIEE etc.
Having said that, I'm not sure how long this differentiation has existed.
We (the civils) have been around since 1818, with Thomas Telford as first president. The
MIMechE was formed later, by George Stephenson, if I remember rightly, who's
application to the ICE was turned down. Heres the link to the Mechanicals web site.

If they are anything like the ICE, then they are most helpful with enquiries.
Regards,
Dewi
