Vaughan, I cannot find the John Charles you are looking for........I cannot
see him in Penllech in 1841, 51, 61, 71 census returns and he had died pre
1881........There is a John Charles of the age he would have been in Pembrey
parish born Pembrey living in Railway Tavern Burry Port......I know of that
one because there is a Charles connection to my line through marriage so I
always follow this name, they were mariners though not farmers.......
I looked at my marriage database and cannot find any John Charles from or
marrying in St Clears......it appears to be a Pembrey Kidwelly Llanelly area
name........
there was a John Charles to an Ann Edmund in Pembrey in 1825
also a John Charles to a Mary Willis 1818 Llanelli....
there were more but they seemed to be the most relevant.....
He was not in Penllech 1851 census, of which that seemed to be an area, not
the farm.....the John Charles aged 8 in St Clears was in 1851 census....so
that one is no good...!!
The only other Voss I have in my database is
Llanelly 1851 enu dist 2d & 3b Hengoed and Westfa
sch 98 page 28
Long Row
Ann Voss head 68 pauper born Kidwelly
Margaret Thomas visitor 52 born Llanelly
hope this can help a little bit.......I'll see what else I can find...
Pauline

Subject: [Cmn-L] Charles/Voss.
Seems we got disconnected so let's have another attempt to clear
up the
St.Clairs details.Pat was thoughtful and kind enough to send me the two
notes you, Pauline , sent which I was unable to receive.
When John Charles,43, m.Ann Edwards,35, on Oct.12/1872 both of the
Wern, Llanelli, the groom's father was described as John Charles
(deceased). The brides father was William Edwards. This was Ann's
third marriage having previously been married to a Rees and a Griffiths
- all offspring shown on the '81 census residing at Ann St. Llanelli.
This would make their respective birth years as 1829 and 1837 - give or
take a year.
Ann Edwards was one of a son and five daughters of John Voss's
daughter, Margaret, who married the said William Edwards. Therefore I
don't think the John Voss - 29 in the '51 census is our man.
But back to the Charles bit. It is, according to the family historian,
the John Charles, the deceased father of the John who married Ann
Edwards that moved from St.Clairs to Pwll to keep Penllech Farm, Pwll.
I have no idea of any previous names or abodes and I can add no more
dates. I'm so sorry I can not be more helpful.
You did refer to John Charles aged 8 living in St. Clairs, Gelly Fach
but in what year?
Thank you, again, for all that you have done.
Vaughan Lewis.
p.s. I believe The Wern was synonymous with Ann St.
