Hello Pauline!
Actually, Carolyn had most of this information (we're in contact already), but I was
writing to you to see if any of this extra information might lead you to find something in
your records.
The one fact that I neglected to include (I was at work, going on memory) was that the
"Composition" quote mentioned that this James and Ann/Hannah were married in
1811.
Also, is there a map that might point out where the house called Clawddcoch might be, or
at least a map that might point geologically where some "red bank" material
might be found? Not that you are familiar with the geology and soil composition of the
area--you do quite enough already! Unless you're a geologist too...in a secret life!
Also, I think that I understand that you have access to the censuses (all of them?
through 1901?), and that you are actively indexing them for all of Carmarthenshire. Do
you also have copies of the parish registers? I believe that I remember that the
Bishop's transcripts are not generally available, but do you have those as well?
Lastly, you seem to be the exception among list admins--most don't often post, let
alone do lookups for posters. Some don't seem to be present at all among the lists
that I subscribe to! We are grateful for the extra effort!

(Just in case you're curious--Carolyn is my fourth cousin once removed, and we are
both related to the Carol Mills from Texas, whom Carolyn said you met in Wales some years
ago--she's my fifth cousin once removed, and Carolyn's fifth cousin--but really, I
don't know why I thought you'd be curious--just showing off I suppose...thanks!

Thanks for the information that you have given in this detailed email.....I
hope that it will help Carolyn in her researches.....
The reason I answer most of the mailings is that I am the list administrator
for this list, and also the index compiler for all the information given
here, so I answer the queries as I have the indexes on my own computer, or
somewhere in hard copies.....
I have a vast amount of indexes, but at this present time I have not indexed
as far north as Llanllwni for most records, only the marriages, wills etc.
I read each and every message, sometimes I do miss a few as I plan to get
back to the enquirer, but I do have a memory lapse sometimes.
I enjoy what I do, trying to give assistance to listers researches, either
by locating them, or even by making the information available on CD which
each one can view in their own homes which is a bonus with family history.
The way you have phrased your subject line shows exactly who it is for, and
what the subject is.....I must admit to be one of the people who does not
always change the subject column!!
Hope this answers your question.......thank you for your input....
regards Pauline

Subject: [Cmn-L] Attn: Pauline James; James Jones of Llanllwni, b. 1786
Pauline and all,
I am following up on an message posted by Carolyn Derby to this board, and
the
reply that you, Pauline, posted asking for verification.
Since I descend from this James Jones also, by way of his son James, I
wanted to
add the information that I have to the mix.
To recap, Carolyn had asked what information that you might have about her
great-great-grandfather, James Jones, born 1786, who was married to
Hannah/Ann (depending on the source), born 1789 and lived at a house called
Clawddcoch (apparently meaning "Red Bank") in Llanllwni, Carmarthenshire.
In your reply, you wanted to verify that it was truly Llanllwni where
records
should be sought. I believe that it is.
The sources that we are going on are disparate and secondary, but include
a letter
from a Swansea descendant of these same people with whom we no
longer have contact after this relative suffered a severe stroke. We also
have mention in this James Jones' son's family bible (featured courtesy John
Weston in detail at:
http://www.data-wales.co.uk/biblepage.htm )
where James' son James listed his birthplace at Llanllwni.
Another source, a typescript from 1963 called "Jones Family Record" by a
man named Arthur Roberts (perhaps of Utica, NY), names this James Jones
also, as well as several generation of his descendants, but without any
source notations and few other details.
The final source is perhaps tertiary at best. A letter that I have
mentions that
there was a "Composition on the 'Jones in Wales'", and
paraphrasing it, James Jones (b. 1785 according to this source) built a Sod
House on the Public Land in 1820 in one night, "according to English Law at
the time." Capitalization rules notwithstanding, I think that the name of
the house, Red Bank, probably derives from the qualities of the sod or soil
in the area.
I would think that a death record might exist for this James Jones, since
it is
likely that he died after 1837. While I do think that this family was
nonconformist, and therefore a parish register entry might not exist for
James' or Ann/Hannah's birth or marriage in Llanllwni, perhaps there is some
record in your collection that would point to this family.
In addition the information that I have detailed, it might help you to
know that
this James and Ann/Hannah had five children we know of:
Elizabeth, James (b. 1826), Evan, Hannah, and Thomas.
Maybe I can use this inquiry to ask a couple of other questions too,
Pauline.
It seems that you are doing the lion's share of the lookups for this list,
for
which many of us are thankful. It's patient and sometimes tedious work
that you do, and I hope that you you know that we appreciate it.
Asked in the spirit of not wasting your time and making your job easier,
what
sources are you drawing on and what can listers expect that you might
be able to find for them? And, more importantly, what is the best way for
us to phrase our subject lines and messages so that you sift through the
least amount of insginifican information before delving into your archive?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Aaron Howard
