Hi,
Not to split hairs, but this is what the FreeBMD page says: The district Llanelly spans
the boundaries of the counties of Carmarthenshire and Glamorgan ....
I remember when I was just starting out with my Welsh genealogy and had not been there yet
and did not know anything really about Wales, someone from Swansea on the GlamFHS list
told me that even though I had a vague reference to ancestors being from Swansea (in a
published 1872 book), that it could have included "the Swansea area," which
conceivably could have meant Llanelli, as well, just so readers would have an idea of
where the person was from, and perhaps to distinguish it from the town of the same name in
the North.
I still don't know very much about Wales, but this bit of info helped me a lot. I also
just recently found out that although Cnap Coch (yes, that spelling is correct), which is
in Swansea, was for some reason enumerated with Neath in 1841--that is why it took me a
fewe years to locate some of my DAVIES family--I had only been looking in Swansea.
Anyway, every little bit helps--even if it is slightly contradictory information--it gives
one more places to look. In the US, part of my family is recorded in 3 different counties,
but they never moved--just the county boundaries changed.
I am grateful for all the info on this list--I am learning every day!
Mona

Hi Mona
I have never heard that Llanelli could be called part of Swansea.. As you
know Llanelli is in Carmarthenshire and Swansea in Glamorganshire......in
the 1860's and later Llanelli was the biggest exporter of tin in the
world.......so it played a very important part in the industrial revolution
for the area.
Therefore think the 'resident of Swansea' maybe mistaken.....unless anyone
else has heard of this??
regards Pauline

Llanelli is a different town from Swansea, but close-by. Also,
Swansea
records are in Glamorgan, while Llanelli's are (at leat mostly, as I
understand it) in Carmarthenshire. I *was* told by a resident of Swansea
that my ancestors may have been considered as "from Swansea," even if they
came from the Llanelli area, as Swansea was the largest town in the area.
I guess it might be like saying you're from Los Angeles, if you actually
live in Santa Monica. Most folks would know where Los Angeles was, but not
necessarily where Santa Monica was.
I am very interested in any info anyone has on this Theophilus DAVIES and
family, too. Although he is of a later generation than my David, Daniel,
Thomas, Sarah, and John DAVIES, the similar given named (yes, common, I
know) and the fact that he began as a copperman, lead me to think their
might be a distant connection.
I am fairly certain I found David DAVIES' wife and children in Cnap Coch
(in Swansea, but enumerated with Neath) in 1841. Cnap Coch (yes, that is
the correct spelling) was part of Llansamlet (Lower, I believe) and the
White Rock Copper Works were there. By that time, David was already in the
US.
Thanks for any add'l info.
