The only parishes that come to mind as starting with a "KI" sound are
Cydweli, Cilycwm, Cyffig and Cilrhedyn (partly in Pembrokeshire), and none
of those are close to Kibwen. Nigel, are you sure of the transcription of
"Kibwen" ? Do you have a copy of the entry that you could e-mail me - or
alternatively if you have the exact census reference I could have a look
next time I'm at the FRC.
Carmarthen towns and parishes are listed on Genuki:

My theory about being bailiffs or farm managers for a large estate seems
unlikely in view of their later history as tenant farmers, albeit as you say
on quite a substantial scale.
It all seems very puzzling!

Anna, I agree about the surname Davies......the enumerator or even
parish
Vicar would have written Davies unless instructed otherwise........as Davis
is not the popular way of spelliing it in Wales.....
Interesting story about the farmers......I had never thought of it that
way,
my Daniel Davies moved around Conwil Elved Newchurch and St Peters,
but
always close to Conwil Road......
Any idea on what the place name could be?
Pauline
