In which case perhaps you should be looking for Hoyle, Hoell, Poell,
Powell, Powells (Ap Howells) and others too, but not in your case.
Somebody gave me a very useful link to name frequency research the other
day, and distinguished between Howell and Howells on it.
The highest frequency of Howells was in Ceredigion.
If I can find it I shall forward it to you to play with. East Anglia for
example there is a very high number of people by the name of Howell,
as far as possible from the mines perhaps!
Pauline tried to persuade me that my forebears had been Howells and not
Howell. It is not so and I know it, by word of mouth since the
1860s. Even then I get letters from people who think that all Welsh
names end in -s.
Don't forget that the plural in welsh in a Welsh speaking area is not -s
at all. It is -au or -iau.
If you go that far you change your name to Hywel! I only found that once
in the frequency website in Ceredigion!
Add that to the list above and you have got Hywel; Hywell; I've never
seen Pywel or Pywell but somebody will think of it no doubt!
Hywell as you certainly know is pronounced the same as "o" in the
english spelling. Hywell=Howell .
Gar By the way how does anybody get the circumflex "i" on the Windows
platform?

Hi Gareth
beg to differ, all the Howell family in my line from Llanddowror
changed their name to Howells, seemed to
be around the 1870's and all who moved to Pontypridd
changed their name to Howells....maybe they were wanted!!!
