Subject: [Cmn-L] Patronymics.
This is an enquiry about the use of patronymics.
David LEWIS married Rachel OWEN at Laugharne in 1773.
All their 9 children are surnamed LEWIS at baptism at Laugharne.
David LEWIS was bapt Laugharne 1756, son of William & Elizabeth LEWIS.
(IGI)
When I looked on the IGI for a baptism for William LEWIS the most likely
was
1720, St Clears. However, the parents are given as Lewis & Catherine
LLOYD.
Am I correct in thinking that William LEWIS received a patronymic (e.g.
William ap Lewis)? Or is this another IGI blooper?
If a patronymic, does anyone know around what date surnames were
consolidated to replace/phase out patronymic naming in churches in the
area
of Laugharne/ St Clears?
Regards
Stephen
