Nigel
Being as the census was taken in Devon, I would assume that the enumerator
probably would not know how to spell the welsh place names......do you know
if your Davis family would have had a welsh or english accent.....
I am trying to think of what Kibwen could have sounded like......it is not a
place in Carmarthenshire.....
Can anyone else think where it may be.....
I'll get back to you
Pauline

Thank you very much for this input. It is much appreciated.
Originally the place name was from the 1851 census for Rowley, Honiton,
Devon (HO/107/1863 Folio 218 page 7. The place of birth for Edward DAVIS
is
listed as "Kibwen- CHH". In 1861 his place of birth is listed as
"Carmarthen"; and in 1871 it is "Carmarthenshire". My knowledge of
Welsh
places is very poor, I have used the Ordnance Survey site. I have looked
but
cannot find a "Kibwen". It was suggested on the Devon list that
"Kibwen"
may
be Kidwelly. Any alternative suggestions would be very welcome.
The fact that you could not find any DAVIS in the Parish leads me to think
that I must have the wrong place.

Dear Nigel
You state that they were born Cydweli/Kidwelly Carmarthenshire.......I
cannot find baptisms in the parish church of Kidwelly for these people.
I have a burial for a
James David Lady Street aged 39 on 5th April 1830 Kidwelly
no Davis in my index......
