Yvonne,
I live in Kansas, Brown County is about 60 miles from my home. I will be
glad to do some research for your family.
My father's parents came from John Lewis and wife Mary Thomas were born in
Abergwilli,Carmarthenshire. They moved to Cefn Coed y Cymmer (I assume to
find work) north of Merthyr Tydfil, where their children, on of them was my
grand grandfather, William Lewis was born -- he married Elizabeth Morgans in
Vagnor Church. They came to Pennsylvania in about 1874. Then they came to
Kansas.
William Lewis's son married Sarah Ann Griffiths, her parents John Griffiths
born in Llanartheny, Carmarthenshire, his wife Eliza Davies born in
Llanllanddog, Carmarthenshire. ( I have never found her or parents
Llanllanddog) They lived in Merthyr Tydfil when my grandmother was born
there. The Griffiths came to Ohio then to Kansas.

Subject: [CMN-L] Family of David EVANS and Ann(ie) BOWEN/HOWELL 1841,
1851,1861
Dear Fellow Listers
I am hoping you can help me trace the origins in Wales of the family
shown in the below in the 1880 US Census for Padonia, Brown County,
Kansas. According to Cutler's "History of Kansas", the family emigrated
from Wales to the USA in 1869, so should appear in the British censuses
for 1841, 1851 and 1861. The book also states that the head of the
family, David EVANS was born on 30 May 1819 in the County of
Carmarthen. By the time the family arrived in the USA David Evans was a
member of the Baptist Church, so it seems unlikely that we shall find an
infant baptism for him. The "History of Kansas" states that he married
Miss Annie BOWEN in 1848, who was also from Carmarthen. However, in
David's obituary her name is stated to be Annie HOWELL, the year of
marriage 1846 and the year of emigration 1860, so perhaps they won't be
in the 1861 Census. However, since Frances, who was 12 in 1880 was
stated to have been born in Wales, it seems unlikely that they emigrated
as early as 1860.
The obituary for their daughter Sarah, who died in 1933, gives her
birthdate as 30 September 1849 and birthplace Llanelly, so this may
provide a clue.
My interest is that the youngest child, Frances, married my husband's
great-uncle, Arthur HAGGETT, who emigrated from Somerset to the USA and
was for a time Pastor at the First Baptist Church, Hiawatha, Brown
County, Kansas.
