Hi Louise
I have an interest in the WATERS family of Penally through the marriage of
William WATERS (bapt 16.1.1753 Penally) to Mary FURLONG on 22 May 1792 at St.
Michael's Pembroke.
William's parents were Robert WATERS and Mary ROWE who married 20 August
1748 at Penally. Their first child was Thomas WATERS bapt 23 February 1749/50
at Penally. I have a note that he is probably the Thomas WATERs whose will
was proved at the PCC on 23.2.1820, his place of residence being Llanfihangel
Abercowin. I believe you may descend from this man. His brother William
Waters (bapt 16 January 1753 at PenalLy) appointed in his will (dated 22
September 1834) John WATERS of Treventy, Carms as one of two Trustees. So there is
definitely a link somewhere.
I do have some family trees for the WATERS family, prepared by Major Francis
Jones when writing the above book which would help with making the link.
There is also in West Wales Historical Records Vol 6 - 1916 an article on
Early Banks in West Wales by Francis Green. This contains a 3½pp brief history
of the Carmarthen Bank mentioning several members of the WATERS family. When
it failed in 1832 a Mr. Hulme who had been one of the clerks went to
Pembrokeshire and induced a Mr. Rober Lock to start a bank in Pembroke called Lock,
Hulme & Co. It remained in business until 1868 when it was purchased by the
London and Provincial Bank, Ltd. Mr. LOCK was actually Robert Lock
1808-1870 whose brother George's first wife was Mary WATERS a daughter of William
WATERS and Mary FURLONG. So you can se how these families were interwoven.
If you do not already have this it may be of interest
LLANDEILO ABERCYWYN, Llandeilo Abercywyn
In 1794 the manor and its rights were sold to Philip Prothero, Esq., of
Bristol. In 1798 Philip Prothero gave a lease of the capital messuage and
mansion house and lands (326 acres) to the tenant, Thomas Waters gent for 21 years,
and in 1805 the lessor's successor , Sir Henry Protheroe of Bristol gave a
lease of Llandeilo (£500 rent p.a.) and Pentrewyn farm (3£340 rent p.a.) to
the said Thomas Waters for 3 lives. On 31 January 1806, Sir Henry (then of
Parkrow in Westbury-upon-Trym parish, Glos.) sold the Manor or Lordship, the
capital messuage and Llandeilo Abercywyn farm (335 acres) and Pentrewyn to Dr.
John Jones, Bachelor of Physic, formerly of Haverfordwest, but then of
Bronwydd Cards.) for £18,800.

Looking forward to hearing from you so that the missing links can hopefully
be found. Also any additional information would be gratefully received
Bye for now
