Hello list
I found this new searchable resource today, at least new to me, forgive me if you have
seen it before. Google Books has digitized and placed on line the following;
Geiriadur bywgraffyddol o enwogion Cymru. 2 cyfrolau By Josiah Thomas Jones,
Printed in 1870 it is a comprehensive 600 page biography of welshmen of the time, most of
them professional men ( no Ag Labs or women need apply). You can search by name and copy
the digitized version directly or download the whole thing and copy the original image
pages, all free.
It is not, in my humble opinion, intuitive; to get access go to
www.books.google.com/books
Go to Advanced Search, Enter the full name of the author ( Josiah Thomas Jones) and select
the title above. The first several pages are blank, keep paging through until you get
content, the digitized version is search-able but it has been machine digitized and there
are many errors, 1863 for example sometimes comes out as 1363. So if you find a name of
interest then go to the Image version on the same web page and try to read it directly,
it is in 19th C Welsh. In a document use the search button on the bottom right not at the
top.
For me it was very important as it verified that my ancester James Sylvanus of Saron
Chapel Llangeler did in fact adopt the name DAVIES as I thought.
Hope it helps
Dave Davies
