sure that he should have said son of Robert and Elizabeth Matthews - As
this is a translation then maybe a transcription error ?)
We come now to two brilliant literary men that the parish can be proud
of - Tom Matthews and John Fisher.
Tom Matthews was born on September 3rd 1874 at Glangwendraeth in the
parish of Llannon, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Matthews. Before he
was two years old they moved to Llandybie where his father took charge
of the National School there, and it was in his father's school that Tom
received his early education He was a student teacher in Llandybie for a
while and webt to University College, Cardiff in 1898, gaining a B.A. in
1900 and an M.A. in 1908.
He was for short periods a master in Pwllheli, Ynysfach, Glyn Neath, and
Fishguard. After serving for a short while at Gwynfryn under Watcyn Wyn
he went to Lewis School Pengam, and remained there until his death in
1916.
Early in his career he had an interest in everything Welsh, including
Welsh art, and through this came into close contact with Sir Owen M
Edwards. From 1908 to 1916 there were nearly 50 articles of his in the
pages of popular Welsh magazines. His subjecys were art in Wales, Penry
Williams, Letters from Rome, Brittany, The art of Margaret Lindsay
Williams, Photographs etc etc.
Owen M Edwards said if him in a tribute after his death " Tom Matthews
had cut new ground in many directions of Welsh Literature and Art. He
also showed how to write a story or historical novel ....."
Mr Christopher Williams, the artist, paid the following tribute to him
" I feel the loss of Tom Matthews keenly. Perhaps I knew him as few did.
He alwayd ahd an enthusiasm for Wales. When we were in Morocco or
Holland it was the contrasts of those countries and peoples to Wales and
the Welsh that interested him...... He was always striking out for fresh
soil, and had he lived, he would have struck it in such a way that
others, at any rate, would build well on it, even if he would not
himself"
Tom Matthews died on September 6th 1916, and was buried in the parish
cemetery, Llanydie, to the sorrow of the whole nation.
A lament to him was the competition text in the National Eisteddfod at
Ammanford.
Here is a list of his works (apart from his contributions to the
magazines such as "Y Cymru" and the " Carmarthenshire Antiquarian
society") :-

Dear List,
I am seeking information on the following Mathews family. I have traced
Robert from birth (in Clydach, Swansea, Glamorgan) to his education to
become a school teacher, to his subsequent marriage, children, and settling
down in Llandybie, Carmarthen. I would like to find out what happened to
this family after the 1901 census, where they might be buried, marriages of
children, etc. I do not know what church they attended.
The book, THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH OF LLANDYBIE, by Gomer M. Roberts, lists
several references for this family under Mathews and Matthews. This book
has not been microfilmed by the FHL in Salt Lake City, so I am unable to
order a microfilm of it. Would someone who has a copy of this book please
look up the Mathews family for me?
Father: Robert Fisher Mathews - 1851 to ?
Wife: Elizabeth Lewis - born about 1851 (Llanelly), died ?
Children:
Thomas (Tom) Mathews - born 1874 (Llanglndeirne), died ?
Jane Mathews - born 1876 (Llandybie), died ?
David Mathews - born 1878 (Llandybie), died ?
Bessie Mathews - born 1879 (Llandybie), died ?
Margaret Mathews - born 1882 (Llandybie), died ?
John Mathews - born 1885 (Llandybie), died ?
Any additional children?
I appreciate any help anyone can give me, even if its a direction to the
correct church they attended so I can order records which list this family.
Thank you!
Kathy
