List members,
It has been a decade since I was part of this list and I'm glad to be back
in touch with Carmarthenshire. My Thomas family roots are in
Carmarthenshire. After many years of wondering, I have recently confirmed
the locale of my ancestors in Llanfihangel ar Arth parish on the border
with Llanllwni parish. John Thomas (my g3Grandfather ) had a farm of 5
acres named Clynyrhafod. I know this from his will and from the 1851 census.
On the opening page of census records during the middle of the 19th
century, I discovered that the boundaries of their section in Llanfihangel
ar Arth extended from Altwallis Bridge along the turnpike to New Inn, along
the Perth y Berllan river to Clynyrhafod, and then along the mountain ridge
back to the Altwallis river and finally back to the bride.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this Clynyrhafod farm?
Judging from the outline of this region Llanfihangel ar Arth on the map, my
assumption is that the "Perth y Berllan river" is now called Afon
Gilwydeth, and my guess is that the farm must have been located very near
modern-day Brechfa Forest Barns and Clyniau farm (aka Gloria Jones farm).
I would appreciate any feedback from list members about my intuitions. I
would also be glad to correspond with anyone with connections to my Rees
Thomas family, his life at Goodig Farm in Pembrey, or to his wife, Ann
Solomon and her Pembrey ancestors.
Respectfully,
D. W. Thomas
