Hi Graham
I agree trying to prove anything definite this far back up the trees is
difficult. I will be delighted to share any information with you. However I
notice there is no mention of a Mary in your list of her children and it is
Mary Bowen that is my great, great, grandmother. However I think we have the
same Rachel Bowen as I have Rachel and Thomas Bowen (and Mary) with a John,
Johana and Emah in the 1851 census (see below). Have you already got details
on Mary, her birth certificate/date as I would be very interested in these?
The basic outline of what I have found so far, hopefully it ties up with
your information and some of it may be new info and/or prove useful to you:
John Davies was my great grandfather. He was born John Bowen on 08/05/1869
at Tairhod, the illegitemate child of Mary Bowen and I assume a Joseph
Davies who she later married on 29/09/1871, and with whom she had several
other children.
The first reference I have to Rachel Bowen is as "Mother in Law" in the 1881
census living with Joseph Davies and Mary (RG11, Piece 5378, Folio 79, Page
8). They were all living at Tairhod at the time including John Davies my
great grandfather who was 11 at the time. Rachel was 75 and has Llanarthney
as her birthplace. Mary was 32 and has Llangendeirne as her birth place.
Rachel (Head, Pauper) and Mary (dau, working in brickyard, this time birth
place listed as Llanon) are listed wrongly as Bowlu (in Ancestry.co.uk) in
the 1871 census. John is 2 and although Mary and Joseph aren't married yet
he is listed here as John Davies, which I think confirms Joseph Davies as
the father. A Mary Ann Isaac (grand dau) is also listed as lving with them
(so there is an Isaac branch somewhere). They are living at Pant y clatses
row. Reference RG10, Piece 5472, Foilo 13, Page 10.
I can't find then in the 1861 census, but if you have information/reference
that would be great.
In 1851 Mary (2), is listed as living with Rachel (47) and father Thomas
Bowen (Head, born Lllanelly abt. 1803, Colier). Therefore there is the
definite link of Thomas Bowen married to a Rachel who had a daughter Mary.
Apart from Mary whose birth place is listed again as Llangendeirne the birth
place for all the other children is listed as Llandarog: Anne (18), David
(14), Emah (8), Johana (10), John (12). Reference HO107, Piece 2469, Folio
307, Page 8. They are living at Ty Rhod which I suspect may be an
earlier/different spelling of the later Tairhod.
(I enquired with Lllanelly registry office to see if they could find the
birth certificate for Mary to identify Rachel's maiden name but they
couldn't find it. They suggested I try Carmarthen, which I haven't done yet.
Perhaps this another possible avenue for us both (unless you have done this
already) as Mary's birth certificate may have different details from the
ones you already have)
I have also found Rachel and Thomas Bowen in 1851 with Anne, David, John and
Rachel (dau, 7). HO107, Piece 1384, Book 7, District 26, Folio 4, Page 2,
Line 1. The address is difficult to make out but I think it is Cillay(?)
fach, Hamlet of Killay, Llandarog. Interestingly at this address is also a
Anne Bowen (70) pauper, who I suspect could be Thomas Bowen's mother. (Anne
Bowen also appears on her own in the 1851 census as a Cooper's Widow, birth
place Llangendeirne).
I also think I have found possibly Anne Bowen (as Anne Bassett) married to a
Thomas Bowen and therefore Thomas's father in IGI married 27 Jul 1790 and
listed in IGI with several children.
Hopefully some or all of the above is of interest to you and any additional
information/dates etc. you can supply would be greatly appreciated.
Regarding your original query could Lottwick be an alternative spelling to
Lodwick (I have seen Lottwicks and Lodwicks in the Census and have never
been sure if they were different families or just different spellings) and
then shortened to Lott be a reason why they appear as Lott?

Hi Roy
Picking up on your message regarding Rachel Bowen. She was also my
great great great grandmother.
To date I have been unable to confirm her maiden surname. The only
marriage I can find to a Thomas Bowen is for a Rachel Lodwick .
However, on the birth certificates of their children John, Johannah and
Emiah her maiden name is given as Lott.
Their daughter Anne married David Evans and both were living at
Gwendreath Row before moving to Aberdare.
I would be interested to share any information on the family.
Regards
Graham Powell
