Hello all , re the queries , we still used the word mitching when I was in
school , meaning playing truant. 3d would have been 3 pennies "old money"
pre-decimalisation. As for making balls of fuel , I can remember my
grandfather making what sounded like "pele mond" . He was a miner and had
some free coal and some discounted coal - but he loved his fires and would
mix the coal dust that remained after "riddling" through a mesh with
something to make extra fuel. I'm not sure what he used with the coal dust -
though I note a load of clay was delivered to the school so maybe
coaldust/clay? My grandparents lived in a terraced house and had a fire with
an oven in the scullery ( kitchen by modern terms) , in the kitchen ( what
would be a living room) and on special occasions in the parlour (lounge).
Hope I haven't confused you more! Chris
