Hi Pauline:
My grandfather David bought a house at 16 Silver Terrace in 1925, which
was left to his daughter in 1954 on his death to his daughter (my aunt
Gwladys) Gwladys Evans m. Hugh Evans). She lived there until her
dementia? got too severe. You may know Melville and Lettice Davies - he
was the last minister at the Tabernacle - who kept an eye on her for
many years. The 1901 census shows them at 16 Carway St. in Pembrey,
although my father was born in Burry Port.
My grandfather was a well known bandmaster of the Burryport Brass Band
for a number of years in the 20's, perhaps later. I have heard him
called David the Band. My father Gwilym was also very musical and played
the organ at the Tabernacle - as did his sister. My Dad left for Canada
in 1925 and I do have a press clipping describing his background at that
time.
My grandmother was Eliza Phillips. Her father was Henry Phillips, a
master tailor and draper. They lived at New Street for some time
including in 1891 I believe. The 1901 census shows him at 16 Station St
in Pembrey. He was born in Johns Town, his wife Eleanor in Swansea.
My grandparents and the Evans are interred together in the hillside
cemetery in Burry Port. My wife and I visited Burryport in about 2001
and were shown around by Melville. Henry Phillips is buried in the
Tabernacle plot.
I grew up in British Columbia. I had one great aunt (Eleanor Phillips)
in the town and another (Emily) elsewhere in BC. Through a number of
sites - mainly Genes Reunited - I have come in contact with three
descendants of the Phillips family, all in England.
Anything click??

Hi Pat:
I have tracked down the siblings of Joseph at least through 1901
census.
You are correct that Joseph lived in Llanelly - my grandfather David
and
his wife lived in Burryport. I am interested in finding John
relatives
but have been unsuccessful so far. I have found several living
Phillips
descendants - my Grandmother Eliza's family (married to David
John).
I am also trying to get back to earlier generations - James and his
family - so am looking for ideas on where to look. As I am in the US
it
is difficult to do anything but work the internet.
Thanks. Grant

Hi Pauline - and Grant
Yes I have John family connections to Burry Port - but in the case of
Grant's family, looking at the census Joseph and Sarah lived for some
time in Llangunnock , then moved to Llanelly and up to and including
the
1901 census the only link with Burry Port seems to be that one of
their
children, David, was born there in about 1875.
Possibly they were there for a short time - as Joseph was connected to
the railway - but they must have moved on to Llanelly as they were
there
in 1891 and 1901 and as far as I can see no links into any of the
John
families I have looked into.
I don't know if Grant has been looking for later John links or whether
he has been unable to follow up any of Joseph's siblings.
There seems to be Sarah, Evan, Mary, and William.
Or could it be the previous generation to Joseph's father James that
he
means?
Anyway it seens I can't really be of much help - sorry.
Cheers
Pat
