I think "France" would be "Furnace" which is just outside town. When
my dad
was a collier there was a train taking men to and from the pit and coal at
other times ( Graig Merthyr Pontardulais). An engine man may have worked on
the winding gear taking the cages up and down the pit? Chris

Subject: [CMN-L] David Samuel
Hi Barb
The only David Samuel I could find in 1841 who was a collier and living in
Llanelly is:
HO107/1379, book 7, Folio 36, page 8
France[?], Llanelly Carmarthen
David Samuel, 55, Collier, Born in county
Jane Samuel, 35, , Born in county
Mary Samuel, 10, , Born in county
Anne Samuel, 4, , Born in county
I think David and Jane's ages are a bit out because I think this is them
in the 1851 census:
HO107/2468 folio 277, page 34, schedule 123
Rhandir, Llanelly
David Samuel, 54, Engine worker, b. Llanelly Carmarthen
Jane Samuel, 56, wife, b. Llanelly Carmarthen
[engine worker in a colliery?]
There is a marriage in the IGI that could match:
IGI marriage (member submission, so don't know how they got the info)
David Samuel (b. about 1792) married Jane Evan 17 Oct 1817, Llanelly
Carmarthen
Also, your David and William in Merthyr are also there in 1841, along with
another possible brother:
HO107/1415, Book 4, Folio 26, page 22
No 24, Merthyr Tydfil
David Samuel, 20, Smith, not born in county
Richard Samuel, 25, Miner, not born in county
William Samuel, 20, Miner, not born in county
Since ages in the 1841 awere rounded, it is possible that Richard, b.
about 1816 from the 1841 census is the product of the David & Jane
marriage in 1817.
If this is a family group, then there might be more children between
David, b. 1821/22 and Mary b.about 1831.
Hopefully you will get some more information to help prove/disprove this
grouping.
Denise
