Chris,
You may wish to refer to the Welsh language publication "Cofiant Parch
E.Herber Evans,D.D." published by Elfed Lewis in 1901 which is a biography
of Herber.
It confirms that he was born on the 5th July 1836.
His father was Josiah Evans & his mother Sarah James was born 15th November
1812 the daughter of Evan & Ann James.
They were in fact married on the 3rd March 1836 at Cenarth.
He married Jenny Hughes on 20th Sept 1865 at Salem Caernarfon.
He had 2 daughters, Lizzie married to the Rev O.L.Richards Liverpool &
Winnie who died aged 5 months November 1867.
By 1911 this family were living at 7 Hampstead Rd.,Fairfield Liverpool with
four children, Owen Herber born 1899, Thomas William Herber born 1901, John
Herber born 1902 and Mair Eluned born 1904.
All the children were born in Liverpool.
Tracing family forwards is quite difficult especially with Welsh surnames.
I have had however some experience with this & you might like to contact me
off-list.
My own great great grandfather the Rev John Emlyn Jones was born in
Newcastle Emlyn in 1820 & I have done extensive research in this area over
many years.

Subject: [CMN-L] Evans family research (esp. Rev E. Herber Evans)
Dear CMN FHS,
The Rev E Herber Evans, the famous Welsh preacher, was a grandchild of Jonah
& Hannah Evans who originally lived in or near Newcastle Emlyn. Jonah and
Hannah were my great great great grandparents. I believe they were married
in Cenarth on 21 March 1815 and possibly lived at the Nags Head lived in
Pontselly in 1861. I do have some history before this on Hannah's side but
nothing on Jonah's side.
Herber Evans, as he became known, was born in Pant-Yr-Onen, Penboyr Nr
Newcastle Emlyn in 1836. I think he is my cousin thrice removed. Can anyone
help me pinpoint exactly where Pant-Yr-Onen is? I already have a possible
identification of a Pantyronnen in Aberarad. I guess Pantyronen is a house
name rather than a village or hamlet.
In addition, Herber's father was apparently buried in Capel Iwan. Does
anyone know if there is more than one churchyard or graveyard in Capel Iwan?
Is it still in a visitable condition?
I would also like to trace Herber's line down to present day, if possible,
through his only child who survived to adulthood, his daughter Lizzie.
Lizzie married Rev Owen Lewis Roberts in 1896. They, I believe, had four
children, Owen Herber, Thomas William Herber, John Herber (died in Hong Kong
1940?) and Mair Elwned.
My Father (Mr TF Evans) died in December 2008 and, regretfully I was unable
to quiz him in detail before his death about his (and my) roots. I am
visiting Newcastle Emlyn next week to do some research of my own and I am
hoping to find Pant-Yr-Onen or at least the location and Jonah's grave in
Capel Iwan.
Any information on the above, no matter how vague would be appreciated.
Regards.
