Bob
there was a large copperworks in Llanelli, my own gr.gr grandfather worked
there as a furnaceman.....I can see from 1881 that Benjamin was a
behinder/furnaceman.....mine moved to the next village which was Pembrey
parish which also had a large copperworks.......also surname Davies!! Not
connected as he left Conwil Elved for Llanelli to work in the
copperworks.....one of the main industries at that time as the rural areas
had no work except farming that is why there was migration to the large
towns....
Port Talbot has at this moment in time a steel works, unsure if they had a
copperwoks in the 1800's.....
Have you checked the Cambrian newspaper for a death/obit for Benjamin
Davies?
still looking

Hello Pauline
On the 1861 census John Davies is a Furnace Worker in Copper Works. The
1871 that I found has him as a Labourer, I wondered if he was in ill
health
as he died in the June quarter of 1871. The 1871 census show's the Family
that I am sure of David age 10, Benjamin aged 8 and Mary Ann aged 2.
Benjamin is my Interest as his son married my aunt Lucy (Gascoigne)
Metcalfe
from Pembroke a widow with a daughter. I was given the information that
Benjamin's father worked in a Copper Mill, I have tried to find an
obituary
for Benjamin with no luck. Although I was lucky to obtain a chapter from a
book entitled "A Gallery of Past Personalities of Port Talbot" which
contains a chapter on Benjamin's son ,Richard Selway Davies who was the
one
who married Lucy . Richard was mentioned in Dispatches. The Davies family
had many business's in Port Talbot. Benjamin was nicknamed Ben the Oil as
that was the first Business delivering oil . I think I tried all the
newspapers in the area for the Obituary with no luck . I have never found
any information on Benjamin's brother David or sister Mary Ann. I think I
will search for a will or a court case ,I found a court case in Scotland
over a will that named four generations of the two families including
wives
and children.
