Dear Hywel
Many thanks for posting the details for the photo and article.
A member of my family from South Glamorgan (family originated in Carmarthen)
was in a German PoW camp in 1918 - sadly he died on 22nd October 1918. His
name was Zephaniah Richards - Private in the Welsh Regiment - number 21398.
I'm so glad you posted this - I have no idea where he was held but this has
been so useful for us.
Regards
Helen

Dear Hywel
Many many thanks for this email, your web page made very interesting
reading, and loved the photos.......I do not know of any of my family who
were prisoners of war.
I do have family from Caernarvon......my great grandfather was William
Thomas from Aberdaron, his cousin was apparently Tom Nevin, have you heard
of him? but have not found the connection, I know from family stories that
they were indeed cousins. William was a sailor and came to Llanelli South
Wales where he met his wife whose parents ran a local bar......
Thanks again......if you ever come across my family from Aberdaron would
like to know.......it's a beautiful place, which I have only visited the
once.
Pauline

Welsh WW1 Prisoners in a POW camp
This is an item of interest to anyone who had a relative who was taken
prisoner in the Great War. I have a photo of 23 prisoners from Wales
taken
in a POW camp in Minden, Germany, during 1918 and someone on the list may
recognise one of these as one of their relatives.
My grandfather's brother, Thomas Williams, from Penmachno, was a tailor
with
H R Davies, Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, when he enlisted in December 1915.
He was injured in August 1916 and came back for hospital treatment but
returned to France again in 1917 only to be shot and captured during the
Battle of Cambrai at the end of November 1917. He was taken to a POW camp
in Minden and I have a number of photos taken inside the camp.
The most remarkable photo is that of 23 prisoners with the caption "Some
jolly boys of Wales". This postcard was sent to my mother, aged 9 at the
time, on 18 May 1918. I assume that this card was also sent to at least
22
other families in Wales. The photo can be seen by visiting
http://blogs.caernarfonherald.co.uk/hywelroberts/ where you can also read
more about Thomas Williams in the Great War.
Does anyone else have a copy of this postcard? Does anyone recognise a
relative in the photo?
