HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Hi <CanFhsl(a)aol.com> and List,
---------------------------------------------/>and 8 Mar 1999
There has been no response to my 27 Feb 1999/ E-mail on Richard Davis
(1675/80 Wales - 1761 NC). A copy of my e-mail will [not] be pasted at the
end of this e-mail. It is pretty long to go through so I will give the
pertinent facts then you can skim it to see what is in it.
Richard was with a group of 16 Calvanistic Welsh Baptist from
Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire counties who gathered at Milford about
the first of June 1701 and departed for Pennsylvania on the James and Mary.
Richard's first wife, Jennet, was with him and died at sea on 10 Jun 1701.
Richard's brother James, I assume still single, was with them. Their
minister, Thomas Griffith and possibly his wife, Elizabeth were with them.
I assume these were young folks, 18 to 25 years old born in 1676 to 1683
and marrie a year or two earlier. They could have come from a church in
either county but since there were more Davises in Carmarthenshire than the
rest of Wales Carmarthenshire would be our best bet. So we are looking for
a Calvanistic Baptist Church in Carmarthenshire. In the Web Page given in
your e-mail they list 120 churches in the Baptisms list. There were no
Calvanistic Baptist but they do list 36 (or 20%) Calvanistic Methodist. It
appears that the Baptist switched to Methodist in the 100 years from 1700
to 1800. Only five churches had records before 1710: Abergwilli, Ilanelli,
Carmarthen St. Peter, Llanfairary Bryn, Llangennech. Not much there and
these are probably large churches. This group would have come from small
churches or Meeting Cottages. One lead could be the death of Jennet Davis
at sea. She was listed as the first death in the Pencader Church in New
Castle County, Deleware although she died two years earlier in 1701. Her
husband, Richard, founded the church in 1703. Possibly, her death would
also be listed in the church they came from. Their marrage also should
have been listed at the Welsh church about 1699 to 1700. The marriage of
their minister, Thomas Griffith, about this same time should have been
listed in the Welsh church.
Any thoughts or help on this??
Best regards, Bob H. ___
