Hello Diana and Joy,
I have searched the Llanfihangel Abercowin BT's previously for my ancestor David
Harry/Harries. I have a list of Harry's from 1721 onwards, quite a lot throughout the
1700's, until 1788 when there is a big gap until 1809. This is exactly the time I want
as David was born c1800. Without his baptism and parents all these early Harry's are
of no use. With the Parish Register missing as well it is impossible. There was a new
church built in the 1840's and the old one abandoned, perhaps that's how the
registers got lost.
Eglwyscummin marriage register from 1731 - 1838 was used as wrapping paper by the local
shopkeeper in the late 1800's.
Regards,
Elizabeth

Hi Diana
The first Baptism register for to survive for Llanfihangel Abercywyn starts in 1813.
There is a note in Parish Registers of Wales, published by NLW, as follows
"Parish Register Christenings 1759-1812 recorded in 1831 apparently lost. It would
be reasonable to suppose that the said register contained Burials 1759-1812 although the
return reported that no register of burials could be found. Diocesan records records
suggest that c1790 there was here a Parish REgister going back to 1665"
There is a similar report regarding a missing Baptism register for Pontyberem. I know
that it was never handed in to the record office and is still in the church safe as I have
seen and used entries from it. Therefore it may worth while contacting the incumbent to
see ilf he still has the register at the church.
There are Bishop's Transcripts (at the NLW) going back to 1672 with lots of gaps.
The period you are looking for is covered as follows 1784-91, 1793-7, 1803-4, 1806-41
although these entries should be in Familysearch. However they do not always go back much
before 1800.
Regards
Joy

Dear Joy
Good to be in touch after so long. Thank you for looking for me. I saw that one
yesterday and wondered. According to the census information in 41,51,61 and 71 he was
born c1796. I do have others in other lines who are older when they are baptised.
Perhaps I should order a copy of the entry. I believe that I have a brother of
Jonah's called Thomas who is a master cooper in Abergwili c 1797 (they have one of my
Arthur family with them in the census and he married Jonah Jones daughter Anne my great x
2 grandmother ). I will look for him in the St. Clears register. Thomas gives his
birth as Llandefeilog whilst Jonah gives his birth as Llanfihangel Abercowin.
thanks again
Diana
