Attention Elizabeth Wilson
Once again I am in your debt Elizabeth. Thanks for going to all that trouble
for us.We really appreciate it.As you say it is most surprising about the
lack of info available for such a public person. The marriage is a mystery
unless there was a mistake when recording the wedding vows & his mothers
maiden name was recorded and not hers.!!!
Yes Coffs is a very nice part of OZ and maintains an excellent climate. We
don't receive extreme heat or extreme cold.As I am typing this email (3pm)
it is 19.4 degree C and that is right in the middle of winter. It was 6 C at
7am this morning. The 'BIG BANANA'is our tourist attraction. Our population
is about 70,000 for Coffs & district. Coffs will be letting its hair down
tonight. That Aussie boy with the Welsh name Cadel Evans has done us proud by
winning the Tour de France. The first Aussie to do so. His parents are
divorced but his father lives here in Coffs and he has spent almost the
entire day doing radio & TV interviews. The Green & Gold should be most
evident as Cadel rides into Paris today. We have had a good week-end. The
Aussie Rugby Team beat Sth.Africa last night 39-20. A good warm up for the
world cup in September.
Thanks also for the attachments. That's the first photo we have seen of
him. Leaving that amount of money in those days would have made him a very
wealthy man.Noela's aunt who was born in Gowerton in 1882 and emigrated to
OZ in 1919 told her that he was a bit of a philanthropist as well. Edith
John ( aunt) maintaioned he threw coins off a bridge for people to dive
for.Maybe yes -maybe no.
I got out my maps of Wales to check out where you lived. How far is it to
St.Clears from where you are?Noela's great grand mother was born there circa
March 1860.Mary Anne Thomas was her name. She is supposed to be recorded in
the 1871 census. She married Howell Hinds and Noela'S Grand-M ,Phoebe
Hannah Hinds was born in Skewen in 1881 immediately prior to the family
emigrating to Aust.in 1882.There were another six born in Aust. Nth.Q'ld has
many Hinds running around up there who are related.Mary Anne Thomas was a
Griffiths before marriage. Noela's Great great Grand parents were Phoebe
Griffiths circa 1816 St Clears and Henry Thomas circa 1820
Pembrokeshire.(1871 census)Phoebe G is listed as being in the 1841&71
census. Her parents were Thomas Griffiths & Margaret???
Elizabeth I got a bit carried away with myself today.I hope you don't mind.
Best regards John & Noela
Hi Jon,
I've collected all the information about John Hinds from the
Public Trees on Ancestry, and it wasn't a lot. I am surprised there is
so little information about someone who was very important in his time,
and even less about his wife.
I can't find anything much about Lizzie
Powell who is supposed to be his wife. The only one I found was in
Radnorshire, Mid Wales, and she didn't marry John. The only marriage I
could find was the one to Lizzie Jones. As his mother was a Jones and he
was apprenticed to his uncle Charles Jones, a draper, in Carmarthen I
wonder if Lizzie was a relative - a cousin perhaps. There is a Lizzie
Jones, a draper's assistant in the census, but I can't remember now
where she was.
I live in a rural corner of West Carmarthenshire, right
by the Pembrokeshire border. Not very far from Laugharne, home of Dylan
Thomas. We have a small farm with sheep and cattle which keeps us busy.
You must live in a nice part of Oz, isn't Coff's Harbour where they
have a giant banana or pineapple or similar? I think I have seen it on
TV.
Take care,
Regards,
Elizabeth
