Hi all
My twenty odd years of poking around in my family history has led me to Carmarthenshire.
I've known
for many years that my 5 x great grandfather the Rev Thomas Davies was from
Carmarthenshire. He was
the curate of Ystradyfodwg parish church from 1734 to 1753 when he died in a riding
accident. One of
his sons, William Davies was the vicar of Wooten Basset church and his grandson Thomas
Hopkin was a
baptist minister who was responsible for building Bethania chapel in Maesteg in 1826. The
Rev W
Thomas (Glanfrwdd) mentions in his book 'The History Of Llanwonno' (pub 1888)
that Thomas Davies's
father was ' Davies of Talyllychau' or Talley. The way he says it it is as if the
reader should know
who that is. I suspect that he is yet another curate and was quite well known. I have an
inventory
of possesions for a Rev William Davies dated 1726 who was the curate of Talley. It's
possible that
he is Thomas Davies's father or grandfather. I also have a will for another Rev
William Davies dated
1614 who I believe was also the curate of Talley. I have in my notes reference to yet
another Rev
Thomas Davies who was the curate of Coity from 1762 to 1818 and yet again he was from
Talley. I
think they must have had a place like the outside half factory working overtime there
popping out
curates and vicars. The odd thing about the last mentioned Thomas Davies and mine is that
they both
had daughters called Elizabeth (my 4 x great grandmother) and the Thomas Davies of Coity
married
Mary Prichard of Collennau and 'Davies of Talyllychau' married Mary Richard of
Collennau.
Does anybody know about this family?
I've got lots of bits and pieces and I'm hoping that someone reading this list
will have the glue
to stick it all together.
Cheers
Roger Hopkins
