Subject: Re: [CMN-L] Sea pilots.
Hello
When a ship required apilot it would fly a lag from its mast.. It is
vertical stripes of yellow and blue.
meaning " I require a Pilot". Pilots would there have a system of daily
lookout to sea and spot
which vessel is fly that flag and required a pilot. Or if they had a
contract with certain ships or shipping
companies, the ships would fly a house flag and/or four flags each
representing a signal
letter. The four signal letters representing the name of the ship.

Whe I was at sea 1958 to 1962, even though we had radio [ I know that
because I was a Radio Officer !] we still flew flags
on arrival outside a port all yellow Q flag meaning " My vessel is
healthy
and I request free pratique"
" and in port on the last day the famous one on childrens BBC blue with
white square inside P flag "The Blue Peter" meaning
"We are about to proceed to sea"
