Hello Pat,
Our information on John BEYNON is from the 1841 and 1851 census plus the BT's
of Glyncorrwg, which record:-
Marriage, BEYNON John of Glyncorrwg and ROSSER Elizabeth of Glyncorrwg on 11
Nov. 1809
Baptism, BEYNON Rosser, son of John and Elizabeth, 25 March 1810.
Rosser BEYNON represents my family line. He was a noted conductor of the
choir at Zoar Independent, Merthyr Tydfil and his biography is included in
"Music and Musicians of Merthyr" by David Morgans, 1922. That book gives the
additional information: that Elizabeth ROSSER was from Glynneath; that after
the birth of Rosser BEYNON the family moved to Penrhiw and then, in 1815, to
Merthyr; that they had a total of six children Rosser, John, David, Watkin,
Edward and Jane (although the census shows the daughter was actually called
Elizabeth); son John BEYNON also became a conductor (of the Band of Hope at
Ynysgau); son David BEYNON emigrated to Australia.
Watkin BEYNON appears on the 1841 census for South Twynyrodyn,
Watkin BEYNON, age 28, Iron Miner, from GLA
Margaret BEYNON, age 21, - , from GLA
John BEYNON, age 01, from GLA
The International Genealogical Index records the baptism of John and Edward
BEYNON, sons of John and Elizabeth BEYNON, on 15 April 1833 at Zoar
Independent, Merthyr. (According to the 1841 census data, they would have
been aged 4 and 5 years at that stage.)
Rosser BEYNON married Mary LEWIS on 9 Dec 1833 (recorded in the index of
Parish Registers). We have not found the family in the 1841 census (although
they were living in Quarry Row, Bethesda Street, Merthyr Tydfil according to
"Music and Musicians"). In the 1851 census, they were recorded as living at
Zoar Houses, Merthyr
Rosser BEYNON, Head, Married, age 38, Iron mine Inspector, from GLA Rhigos
Mary BEYNON, Wife, Married, age 45, - , from GLA Merthyr Tydfil
Mary BEYNON, Daughter, Unmarried, age 17, Dressmaker, from GLA Merthyr Tydfil
Elias BEYNON, Son, age 10, Scholar, from GLA Merthyr Tydfil
Margret BEYNON, Daughter, age 06, Scholar, from GLA Merthyr Tydfil
Jane BEYNON, Daughter, age 04, - , from GLA Merthyr Tydfil
The IGI shows the baptism of an additional son, John BEYNON baptised on 17
Jan 1836 at Zoar Independent, Merthyr, child of Rosser BEYNON and Mary.
Rosser BEYNON died on 3 Jan 1876 and was buried at Cefn, following a large
funeral, there is a lengthy inscription on his tomb (which I cannot translate
! ).
In the 1881 census, I assume that our Elias BEYNON is the head of the family
living in Christchurch, Monmouth, although there is a slight discrepancy of
ages.
My family line is via Jane BEYNON who married George LEWIS and appears on the
1881 census as,

my grandfather, Rosser Beynon LEWIS.
I should also add that much of the above has been gained through internet
help, which has all been gratefully received.
We are relative beginners at family history and would appreciate any help in
filling the gaps !!
Thanks,
Liz.
