Hi, this is my first attempt at communication although I have been reading the digest for
quite a while. My better half & I visited Carmarthen last May with the express purpose
of chasing my ancestors who we knew little about other than he was a printer and his
grandaughters (2) came to Australia in 1862. After being told by my better half it was a
waste of time looking for Evans' and Jones in Wales we popped into the library when we
arrived at 6.00pm just ot see if there was anything, fortunately the library was open till
7.00pm that night as we first consulted the card index and found a reference right away, I
did have dates from the large Peter Williams bible that was brought to Australia by the
girls, however was not aware of the amount of material available on this Evans family, not
only did I find the whole family, a copy of the Hugh Hughes portrait of the family in 1822
but information on John Evans' father also a printer, Titus Evans from
Montgomeryshire. I began !
writing and copying furiously and was advised to go to the Archive office for more
material the next day. We did this and found a family tree had been depositied some years
earlier which gave information of several lines I did not have anything on. The next day
we returned to the library to gather more and then had to move on to the national library.
My point in writing this is that I have only just scratched the surface of information
about this family and would really like to contact anyone connected with it. I am
decended from Thomas Evans & Mary Jones who lived at Ferryside, Thomas did not go into
the printing and newspaper business as his brothers did and outlived them all. His
daughters Sarah and Louisa came to Australia in 1862 and married in Brisbane, Sarah to
Thomas Dinnar and Louisa to Daniel Jones - a seaman from Carmarthen!! we are not sure if
this was an elopement as he jumped ship in Brisbane before she arrived, my only regret was
not seeing more of Carmart!
hen but found everyone so helpful I thought I experieced the people more than the place, I
would love to come back when finances permit and continue my research although for now it
has to be from afar.
If anyone is connected to this family please contact me and I will give more details
Thanks
