Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the King's horses
And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
'Humpty Dumpty' was the name given to a Royalist cannon mounted on St.Mary's
church,Colchester,at the time of the 1648 siege of the town during the civil
war.
To quote Matthew Carter,Quartermaster of the Royal forces: 'Our cannon on
St.Mary's fired upon the enemie putting sum(sic) troops of horse in
confusion.'
But General Fairfax, commander of the Parliamentary forces, then brought up two
culverins,'which after a battle of sum (sic) hours brought tower and bells
down in ruins with the cannon likewise. This was under the command of
one,Thompson,a man with but one eye-he perished also.'
So all the king's horses and all the King's men really couldn't put Humpty
together again
From Heritage Dec.1995.
