Extension of the Llanelly Tin works

June 9,1892 E. Morewood & Company of Llanelly, Wales selected Gas City,
Indiana to establish Tin Plate, Steel making and a foundry plant.
E. Morewood & Co. will receive free land, free natural gas, free water
supply
The E. Morewood & company is the inventor of the tin plate machines. It's
principal
Works have heretofore been located at Llanelly with 13 mills and seven at
Swansea,
The firm of Morewood & Company makes the celebrated "BV" brand of tin plate
and the "PTL" Ternes, recognized in the trade for years as the best product.
The new establishment will consist of a twenty-mill plant, covering fifty
two acres of land. It will constitute the largest Tin Plate Plant in the
world and will give employment to two thousand people, mostly skilled
workers
Mr. J.H. Rogers, Chairman of the Tin Plate Makers Association of Wales and
managing partner of E. Morewood & Company's Welsh works, has personal charge
of the erection of the whole plant.
To house the thousands of workers,"the tin-bucket brigade", good substantial
cottage frame homes are to be built.
Four rooms, kitchen and summer kitchen, porch, cellar, fence, water well and
outhouse. costing $475.00 to buy or $ 10.00 per month rent. A two story six
room for $ 575.00.
The 1900 census of Gas City Indiana shows hundreds of families who came from
Wales. and my ggrandfather, William Jones was one of those who worked at the
E. Morewood plant as a puddler.
