Can anyone think of a Castle where Rachel could have been brought up
around
Conwil Elved.......
Another idea about the name Harries Marilyn is that from time to time this
name changes from Harry to Harris to Harries........it does get very
confusing....

of information I have to go on.

> 1. One is my gr-grandmother's obituary from the Lebo, Kansas (a Welsh
settlement) newpaper of Sept. 26, 1935. It states, "Rachel
Howells-Davies,
b. Conwil Elvet, Carmarthenshire, South Wales, March 28, 1845. Dtr.
of
John
Howells and Sophia Harri(s)-Howells. Rachel is the last of the
family of
eight children. She came to America (Arvonia, Kansas) in April, 1873 to
join a sister (don't know her name) in America (before moving to the Lebo
area)." A 3rd or 4th cousin reared in Lebo states that Rachel came into
the
U.S. through Canada, not through Ellis Island, NY. for what
that's worth?
> 2. Secondly, on p. 133 of the Carms Marriages 1813-37 Index of the
2000 CD-Rom we have, it shows a John Howells ("Wid" under Notes) and a
Sophia HARRIES, married in Conwil Elvet Parish on June 9, 1829 (I believe
you put day/month, where we put month/day, is that correct? It reads
9/6/1829).
> As I mentioned to Pauline in an earlier e-mail, two of my aunts, who
are still living and in their 80's, have stated numerous times that they
were always told that "Rachel was raised in a castle in Wales."
Unfortunately, I currently have no other information about her siblings
(names/sex) or any specific information on where they were reared.
> Interestingly, the Obit also states that "Rachel was converted during
the famous Welsh revival that went over Wales in 1859 and became a member
of
the Congregational church in her home community." Any other
pertinent
information pre-America escapes me at this point. I believe the Harri(s)
in
Rachel's mother's name is a typo in this little community
paper
>and that it quite possibly should be Harries as in the Marriage Index.
Thoughts? Thanks much for any suggestions or information. Will cc the
List
just in case anyone else notices anything.
