Hi Pauline and Marilyn
I don't want to sound flippant but had you given thought that the castle
might refer to a Castle Inn, Castle Cottage, Castle House, Castle Villa,
Castle Street, Castle Square, Castle Road or even a place name such as
Bishops Castle, Old Castle or even, stretching it a bit New Castle Emlyn as
it is shown in the 1881 Census on some occasions.
I have searched through Conwil Parish for the 1881 Census and see that
there
are a number of Howells and Davies families. On one occasion a Davies
and
a
Howells appear to be farming two adjacent farms. These could be some
of
the
family left behind when others went to US. I have found one farm
called
Baili and wonder if this is an interpretation of the English word bailey -
the external wall of a feudal castle or more widely, any circuit of walls
which surrounded the keep.
Also probably just a coincidence in a advanced search of Howells and Castle
in the 1881 Census the following turned up
Dwelling: Castle Ely
Census Place: Cyffic, Carmarthen, Wales

I know that Cynwyl Elfed is some way from Cyffig but they seem to have come
a
long way from Breconshire as it is.
Bye for now
