Pat,
Many thanks for your reply. No problem replying with questions....happy to
answer if I can.
I have researched the Parish registers for St. Peters, bishops transcripts
at the National Library of Wales, census records and numerous documents at
not only the Carmarthen Records Office, NLW and in London as well in the
hopes of finding any mention of the Woozleys of Carmarthen/South Wales. I am
at a bit of a loss as to what other possible records I could research.
However, in recently moving to the United Kingdom, I have had to leave the
bulk of these records behind, save for the information I have on a floppy
disc.
Problem we have is that we will find mention of one member of the family (a
marriage at St. Peters in 1742), a few baptisms in the years following, and
then nothing. Almost as if they come out from hiding and then go back in
again.
As it is such an unusual surname, with many odd spellings, it 'stands out in
a crowd'. I do know that the spelling of my grandmother's surname, Woozley,
goes back to a case of poor pronounciation or hearing on the part of the
vicar at St. Peters :) Not only do we find them in Carmarthen, but also in
the surrounding areas including Kidwelly.
I will make a note of where all of the gaps lie and send it to the list
should anyone come across this unusual surname.
I have sent you a rather long e-mail explaining the details. If anyone else
would like this information, please feel free to write.
Diane

Hi Diane
You don't say what resources you have already researched in order to
trace the line "back to 1742".
There are 4 households in Wales in the 1881 census with Woozleys.
I presume you have seen them? If not let me know and i will send to you.
have you already checked the 1841,1851,1861 1871 and 1891 census etc?
Sorry to reply with questions - but in the past I have replied to
general queries like yours with several items of information only to be
told "I've already got all that!!"
If you tell us where your gaps are then we can keep a look out for you.

Hi....could anyone tell me if you have come across this rather unusual and
different surname in your research and gleanings? My grandmother was a
Woozley and my cousin in Wales and I have traced the line back to
Carmarthen-St. Peters in 1742. However, there are a few gaps along the way
which we are working diligently to fill in. Although the surname is a bit
unusual as far as Welsh surnames go, it has also undergone various
spellings
throughout the years which makes for some interesting research.
We are having a difficult time finding any records to mention details and
whereabouts of the family during various times throughout the familys stay
in Carmarthen so if anyone has seen reference to the Woozley surname
throughout their research, I would be most grateful in hearing from you.
Many thanks for your time and attention to this posting,
Sincerely,
Diane M. Hungate
