Hi Rosemary
Richard bought reproductions of The Carmarthenshire Castles of Samuel and
Nathaniel Buck from Carmarthen Museum last week (very interesting) and there
is 'The West View of Green-Castle, in the County of Carmarthen' drawing
shown - it states:
This Castle is about two miles south west of Carmarthen on a lofty
situation, commanding an extensive prospect of the River Towey. It is also
called Catle Mole and is supposed to be that which is called by P Powell in
his continuation of St Lloyds History of Cambria Humffreys Castle. It is
said to be one of those built by Uchtred Prince of Merionethshire AD 1138.
(This is situated in Llangain) I only knew about these yesterday - so I
could not hazard a guess as to how many Castle Green's there are, as each
castle would have had a Castle Green......
hope this helps
Pauline

Dear Pauline,
Many thanks for your help. I will keep on searching and
asking, as the references which I have (Bartholomew's Gazetteer and
Phillimore's Atlas and Index of Parish Registers, as well as the internet)
are not sufficiently detailed for what is possibly a local commonly used
name, used within a brief period only, for an officially named body.
Just how many Castle Greens would there be in Wales, and
how many are descriptive local usage, not an official name!
Many thanks,
Rosemary
